OUR HISTORY AND HERITAGE
The descendants of the family of Jack and Mariah Summerall have been gathering together annually to celebrate our bond and heritage since 1956. Hundreds of family members from the west to east coast come to the town of Baxley, GA for the three-day gathering that begins on the Thursday before the fourth Sunday of August and concludes after the Sunday service. Baxley, located in Appling County, Georgia, is where Jack and Mariah and many of their chidren and descendants lived.
The history committee of the Jack Summerall Family Gathering have gathered details of our family's history from older family members, online research and printed documents. Our story is ever evolving as more information is uncovered and we encourage you to collect, record and share stories with us and your descendants. Preserving and remembering our past informs our present and gives us strength, resiliency and hope for the continuation of our legacy in generations to come.
Jack Summerall & Mariah Tillman's Children
JACK AND MARIAH'S CHILDREN
As of August 2025, records currently identify 12 children born to Jack Summerall and Mariah Tillman. The 1880 census records were helpful in determining approximate birth years for the children born before 1880. The 1890 Federal Census for Georgia (and the majority of other states) was destroyed in a fire at the Commerce Department building on January 10, 1921 Children born after the 1880 census are not recorded until the 1900 census. This 20 year gap makes it especially difficult to trace females who may have married and taken on the last name of their spouse by 1900. Mattie and Addie Summerall were found through death certificates.
Birth years varied on census records for the children whose records we found, and the birth order is our best guess. Since the spelling of first and last names varied on many records we settled on the spelling that most frequently appeared or the spelling on the death certificate and/or grave marker.
